UGC vs influencer marketing: content, reach and rights
Compare creator-made files, a creator’s post and identity use; define deliverables, permissions and measures before accepting a quote.
A creator offer can include three different purchases: a video file, a post to the creator’s audience, and permission to use the creator’s identity in an ad. “UGC” does not tell you which parts are included. Before you compare quotes, list the files, who will publish them, where paid media will run, and which rights the buyer needs.
Separate the file from the post
A production-only job pays for content the brand can use within an agreed scope. A posting job also asks the creator to publish to their own channel. A paid ad from a creator’s account adds platform authorization. One order may include more than one item, so ask for a separate description and fee for each.
A file handoff does not by itself settle copyright ownership or every permitted use. In Canada, CIPO says creators usually own copyright in original work, with exceptions such as work made in employment or rights transferred by assignment. If ownership matters, state it in writing and list the licence the buyer receives. CIPO: what you should know about copyright.
TikTok Spark Ads use organic TikTok posts in advertising. A creator’s post can be used with their authorization, and paid engagement is attributed to the original post. TikTok’s Identity feature offers the advertiser’s own linked account or an authorized creator account or post; feature access and available options can vary by account. This platform permission does not define every other use of the creator’s face, voice or content. TikTok About Spark Ads; TikTok Identity feature.
Compare the parts you are buying
| Purchase | Ask the quote to name | Measure |
|---|---|---|
| File | Edited video, raw footage, alternate openings, captions and revision count | Accepted files and production cost |
| Creator post | Platform, account, posting date, live period and reporting | Delivered exposure, audience fit and qualified action |
| Paid use | Brand or creator account, post authorization, placement, territory and dates | Paid reach, response and spend |
| Identity use | Face, voice, name, synthetic performance, campaign and approval | Whether the named person changes the buyer’s decision |
A creator’s audience and identity can overlap in value. Do not count follower reach and recognition as two separate gains without evidence. For a calculation of the added cost of a named person, see how to test a creator identity premium. Example scope summary for a quote
Hypothetical scope only; it is not a rate or standard package. One edited vertical product demonstration for the brand’s own account. The creator does not post it. Raw footage and source project files are excluded. The brand may run the approved file as a paid TikTok ad in the named market for the agreed dates. Use of the creator’s post, account-level authorization, future synthetic generation and other campaigns are excluded unless separately agreed.
Ask the supplier to price production, posting, paid-media use, extra files and any identity licence on separate lines. Add the term, territory, revision limit, approval step, payment date and renewal process. If a quote bundles the items, note that you cannot compare each cost separately.
Choose the purchase that addresses the problem
If you lack product footage, commission the file. If you need the creator to publish to their audience, price the post and its reporting. If paid reach will come from the brand account, do not pay for posting unless it serves another purpose. If the creator’s name or likeness is part of the ad, write down that permission separately.
The brand controls the media it buys, so report media spend beside production and posting fees. A delivered video, a creator post and an identity licence answer different questions. Compare each with the campaign goal, then choose the smallest complete order that can meet it.
For creators, paid video work without followers explains how file-only work differs from posting and account authorization.
Connect this decision to the campaign
