How many UGC creators should you hire?

Choose one creator or several based on the comparison you can fund; there is no universal creator count for paid social.

There is no universal number of UGC creators to hire. Use one when the first question is whether a concept or production route deserves more investment. Compare several when the production and media budgets can support the test. TikTok’s formal split test compares two versions at a time; that does not by itself isolate the effect of a creator’s identity.

Decide what the first test should explain

Write one question. Are buyers interested in the offer? Does showing the product help? Does a particular presenter change the result? Each question needs a different comparison.

If the brand changes the creator, script, promise, setting and audience together, it can compare complete ads. It cannot isolate why one person appears to perform better. That can still guide the next booking if the team keeps its conclusion at the level of the full ad.

TikTok split testing can hold other variables steady and divide the audience into two equal groups, with each group seeing one of two versions. Confirm account eligibility and current settings before booking work around the feature. TikTok split testing.

Use one creator to test a first concept

One capable creator may be enough to learn whether a buyer problem and product explanation deserve more investment. Ask for distinct approaches to the same business question, then compare them with the current alternative.

This keeps more of the first budget for media and lets the team check the brief, footage, review time and final output before expanding the order.

Keep the conclusion narrow. If neither concept works, the team has not proved that creator advertising cannot work. If one works, it has not proved that the person’s identity caused the result; the script or product evidence may have mattered more.

Save what the team learned in terms another creator can use: the objection, evidence, explanation and audience.

Use several creators when presenter fit is the question

Choose people who differ in relevant experience, delivery or fit with the buyer. Keep the core proposition, product evidence, duration range and destination comparable. Let each person speak naturally if delivery is part of the comparison.

Decide whether the test compares identities or complete creative packages. Both are valid questions, but they support different conclusions.

TikTok’s creative guidance, last updated June 2025, recommends ongoing testing and suggests 3–5 different creatives per ad group. That count refers to ad versions, not the number of creators to hire; one creator can appear in more than one version. TikTok creative best practices.

Check the media budget before booking

Record the total budget, production cost, remaining test media, number of comparisons and the decision the result must support.

These numbers are an allocation example, not a recommended budget or sample-size calculation. Check expected conversion rates and the smallest useful effect before booking. To assess more creators, plan pairwise rounds or use a test system that supports the intended number of groups.

If the available data cannot support a person-level comparison, narrow the question or use early research to narrow the list. Interviews can reveal relevance and comprehension problems, but cannot establish who will cause more sales. Use the AI ad-variant planning guide to state what changes between versions; use the incremental-sales guide if the question is whether the campaign added purchases.

Include time and review cost. Different creators may take different time to deliver or need different amounts of editing, even when sales results are unclear.

Read delivery before ranking creators

When ads receive different amounts of spend or exposure, a dashboard ranking alone does not make a fair comparison. Report delivery, outcomes and uncertainty together. An ad with little data may need another comparison before a larger commitment.

A large Facebook study found that some non-experimental ad-measurement methods can give misleading results compared with experiments. It did not compare creator counts or prescribe a hiring number. Gordon and colleagues’ advertising measurement study.

Expand when the result can change the next booking

Add creators when the comparison could change the next purchase and the budget can support the planned rounds. If the first test remains unclear, fix the question, tracking or budget before adding more people.

Connect this decision to the campaign

Record the creator count, versions per creator and review capacity in the campaign brief. The pilot discussion should test a funded question; neither more creators nor more variants is an assumed winner.
