How to use UGC videos on product pages

Use a creator video only when the agreed website use covers it and the clip answers a buying question the page leaves open.

You can use UGC videos on a product page when the agreed licence covers website use and the clip answers a buying question the page leaves open. Choose one question, such as how the product fits or works, then test the page after accounting for production, loading, and update costs. A social ad’s performance does not prove that the same clip will improve product-page results.

On a product page, someone may already understand the offer and need one missing detail. Give the video a job that matches that point in the purchase.

Find the question the page leaves unanswered

Read recent support questions, return reasons, reviews, and on-site search terms. Ask visitors what they still need to know. Choose one doubt that the current page handles poorly and decide whether moving images or a person's explanation would help.

A video may show an action better than a still image. It may also repeat the description while making the visitor wait for the answer. Improve the text or image first when either can solve the problem more directly.

Match the content to the buying doubt

Use a short selection sheet before commissioning or adapting a clip:

Visitor questionUseful content to considerWhat the team must verify
How does this work?Actual demonstration with a clear sequenceThe shown action works with this product
Will it fit my use?Relevant dimensions, context, or routineThe example and limits match the page
Why choose this option?A qualified explanation of a trade-offThe comparison and speaker's role are accurate
What did a customer experience?A genuine, appropriately presented accountThe person had that experience

The creator's identity may help when their relevant knowledge or recognition matters to visitors. If the page only needs a close view of a mechanism, a named person may add little. Pay for the contribution the buyer needs rather than adding a familiar face by default.

In a hypothetical bag page, shoppers ask whether a laptop fits beside lunch containers. A clear packing demonstration with the actual bag and stated laptop size answers that question. A general creator introduction about loving the brand leaves it open.

This is a test proposal, not a standard placement or a claim that video raises sales.

Adapt the ad instead of pasting it unchanged

Remove a social opening that no longer serves the page. Review references to clicking a profile, scrolling, a time-limited offer, or a caption the website does not display. Preserve conditions that make the explanation true.

Keep the product name, version, price context, and destination consistent. Confirm the creator's agreed website use and the final presentation before adding it. Permission for a paid social placement does not answer whether the creator agreed to website use.

Label the speaker's role clearly. A paid presenter, an expert giving an assessment, and a customer describing experience supply different information. Avoid presenting commissioned creative as an independent customer review.

Make the video easy to find and optional to watch

Baymard's 2019 usability research found that some users struggled to find videos placed away from the product image gallery. It does not establish a conversion lift from creator or AI video. Put the video thumbnail in or beside that gallery, and repeat the clip near a relevant detail when that helps answer a question. Use a clear thumbnail and label. Keep key product facts available in text and images so visitors can assess the offer without playing a video. Test the mobile layout as carefully as the desktop view.

Shopify lets merchants add videos as product media, though the theme determines how the page displays them. Check the store’s theme before buying a separate app. The ability to display video does not prove that a product page needs one. Shopify product-media documentation.

Provide captions and check them against the audio. W3C's explanation of WCAG 2.2 criterion 1.2.2 covers captions for prerecorded audio in synchronized media, with an exception for clearly labelled media alternatives to text. Use the full guidance when assessing accessibility. W3C prerecorded-caption guidance.

Include loading cost in the decision

Have the web team check the page before and after implementation on a typical mobile connection. Inspect playback, layout movement, controls, and whether visitors can still reach the purchase action easily.

Google's web.dev guidance explains that video downloads and third-party players can add page cost. It describes poster images and delayed loading as possible controls. Ask the developer to choose the method for the page rather than applying one loading rule everywhere. web.dev video-performance guidance.

Test the whole page change

Compare the current page with the proposed version using a suitable experiment. Keep traffic, offer, and other page changes comparable. Choose a main business measure before launch, such as purchase contribution per eligible visitor, and inspect returns or cancellations when relevant.

Video plays help explain usage. They do not establish added sales: people who choose to watch may already differ from those who skip it. Compare the assigned page groups rather than treating watchers and non-watchers as a fair experiment.

Count content adaptation, implementation, software, and future updates in the cost. Record which product changes would make the clip stale and who will replace it. Keep the video when its measured result or clear customer benefit supports that cost; revise or remove it when the page serves visitors better without it. Check the creator licence checklist for scope questions, and use the incremental-sales guide when the business needs evidence of added purchases.

Connect this decision to the campaign

Write website placement into the campaign licence checklist separately from paid social. A file approved for one ad account does not establish permission for indefinite product-page use.
